Although Wolves’ form had been picking up prior to the international break with consecutive wins over Watford, Besiktas and most impressively Man City – all accompanied by clean sheets – Nuno Espirito Santo will have found the gap in the schedule useful to recharge the batteries.
Their squad is still learning to cope with the demands of European football and the pause in action will have been particularly beneficial for star striker Raul Jimenez.

To be fair to the visitors, they’ve experienced a tough fixture list with half of their eight matches against ‘Big Six’ teams. Excluding such opponents, they’ve won two of three road trips this term, in addition to away day successes in the League Cup at Fulham and Portsmouth.
However, we wouldn’t read too much into those victories over lower league opponents, while their two wins in the top flight came over Brighton and Sheffield United, neither of whom can match the quality of a refreshed Wolves side.

The hosts’ counter-attacking style has served them well against the big guns, and although they experienced difficulty on occasion when being forced to take the initiative when facing the lesser lights of the division, these primarily affected them on their travels.
They’ve lost six of seven winless games away to bottom-six sides since the start of last season, but back at Molineux they’ve gone W5-D1-L1 against such opponents.
What’s been particularly noticeable is the low-scoring nature of Wolves’ home encounters with bottom-half sides.
All 12 since the start of last season have featured fewer than three goals, with them winning 2-0 on four occasions and 1-0 twice. Southampton lost this fixture 2-0 last term and a similar outcome should be expected here.
