It wasn’t as smooth a run as Spurs would have hoped in their group, with them needing victory in their last game to finish top, though they have got arguably the most favourable draw in the competition as they come up against Austrian side Wolfsberg, who are competing in just their third European season, with this their first time reaching the knockout phase.
Jose Mourinho’s men are on the worst run of form since he took over as manager, losing five of their last six matches when including extra-time, though in truth they’ve faced all of Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, and Man City in that time, all of whom are on a completely different level to Wolfsberg, and Spurs fans should be viewing this as a means of getting back to winning ways and building some momentum.
They’ve won four of six unbeaten matches against Austrian sides, and they’ve also been handed a boost in the fact that this match will be played in Hungary, so their opponents won’t be afforded the luxury of playing on home soil.
Wolfsberg did incredibly well to qualify from their group, picking up 10 points from Feyenoord and CSKA Moscow to finish second, and they’ll be relishing the opportunity to play against a club with Spurs’ status.
They would, however, have liked to have built up more momentum on the domestic front before heading into this tie, with a recent W2-D2-L2 record in the league to leave them down in fifth.
Spurs -1 Handicap
In reality, it would be catastrophic for Spurs’ confidence if they were to exit this competition from this tie, and big questions would be raised around the future of their manager, though there’s little to suggest that will happen.
The Lilywhites are second favourites to go all the way, and with a serial winner at the helm, we wouldn’t expect them to fall this early.
They’ve gone W7-D1-L1 in this competition this season when including qualifying, averaging exactly three goals per game in that time, so on neutral territory it seems like a question of not if they will win, but by how many goals.
Six of their seven wins so far in this competition have come by at least two clear goals, and while they haven’t exactly been prolific at the moment, neither have their opponents.
The Austrian side have drawn a blank in four of their last six matches, with the only two exceptions coming against sides in the bottom four of the league, so it’s hard to see them getting a goal here.
That leaves the Spurs -1 handicap at a really solid price for us, and in a game they’re certain to dominate we’re happy to get behind the likes of Kane and Son to show their quality and set up a strong lead to take back to London.
