Former Chelsea defender William Gallas does not know why his old side allowed Fikayo Tomori to leave and join AC Milan.

William Gallas Exclusive: Tomori Should Not Have Been Let Go

Should Have Kept Tomori

Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “I don’t know why Chelsea let him [Tomori] go. I don’t know the reason.

“I have followed him since his move and he is a player that has great capacity to play as a centre-back.

“For him, it was very important for him to play, learn and gradually improve. As a young player, sometimes people think you are ready to go straight in, which isn’t always the case. Defenders are not like strikers, they need more time to develop and learn.

“He went to AC Milan and has had a massive impact on the team. He will feel very good there, so when he comes back to Stamford Bridge, he will be a little bit emotional and he will want to show the club that they made the wrong decision in letting him go. It will be interesting to see how he gets on.”

A Must Win For Chelsea

Chelsea will have a point of their own to prove, as they sit bottom of their Champions League group after the first two games with just one point - and Gallas feels victory in this fixture is essential for the Blues.

“When you play for Chelsea in the Champions League, every game is important,” he said.

“This game will be a test, but the atmosphere at the Bridge will be great and this is a meeting between two European giants.

“Chelsea need to win this game otherwise they look like they may not qualify from the group, which would be a disaster for a club like Chelsea.

“The manager only has a couple of days to get his team ready. He needs to get his system right.

“It won’t be easy to beat Milan. They are the reigning Italian champions and have shown their character - they won their last match with some late goals in Serie A.”

Giroud A Threat

Gallas also picked out another former Chelsea player from Milan’s ranks, in veteran frontman Olivier Giroud.

Gallas hailed his compatriot’s success at both club and international level - and has warned Potter’s men of the striker’s qualities.

“Olivier Giroud [is] coming back to the Bridge and we know he will try to score against his former club,” he added. “It will be interesting to see how the game will go, but Chelsea have to win. They must win this game.

“Olivier, he has always had the same problem. He hasn’t always had the confidence of some of his managers but that didn’t stop him from scoring goals. He always showed a strong character.

“He is a player that never complains if he isn’t playing. He is not a troublemaker. What I like about him is his capacity to come and stay focused on his job.

“He is a striker that can score at any time. He possesses qualities that are very dangerous and he deserves a lot of credit for continuing to fight.

“With France, he needs two more goals to equal [Thierry] Henry’s record. That means a lot and shows you just how good he is.

“I like his mentality. He is really strong in his head and in football if you’re not mentally strong, you will disappear. I won’t be surprised if he scores on Wednesday.”
