Arsenal Must Believe
Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “Arsenal have to believe that they can win the title.
“The players have to think that they can do it and, as a group, will have objectives in place that they will try and achieve. If they want to play for the title, they have to go for it.
“We know it will be difficult. The Premier League is very difficult to win - you have to be strong in every match.
“After the [3-1 win] against Tottenham and with Liverpool up next, who do not look very good at the moment, they have an opportunity.
“If you want to win the Premier League, you need to beat your rivals; the biggest teams. That means you win all your home games and at least get a draw when you play them away.
“I think Arsenal have to take the chance they have this season. Next season it will be different. Clubs will get stronger and it will be a little bit more difficult, so they need to grab this opportunity.”
Derby Win Underlined Credentials
Gallas feels Arsenal’s performance in the North London derby underlined their title credentials - and has insisted that the team must play the same way against Liverpool.
“I thought [the North London derby] was a big test for Arsenal and they passed it,” he said.
“They approached the game in the right way and showed their quality as a team.
“What Arsenal need to do is keep believing in their quality and, if they approach their matches with this desire and level of intensity, then they can compete with any club in the league.
“Arsenal need to keep doing this. They need to take this approach into their next game against Liverpool, which will be another big test, but if they can produce the same football with the same intensity then they will have a great opportunity to beat Liverpool.”
Spurs Not Ready Yet
Conversely, Gallas believes that Spurs’ defeat suggests they are not ready to be involved in the title race - and feels Antonio Conte’s men will have to settle for a place in the top four.
“I still think that Tottenham are missing something to compete for the title,” he explained.
“There was a lot of talk from former Tottenham players at the beginning of the season about the team's title credentials that I didn’t agree with.
“I wasn’t convinced that Tottenham could compete for the title and the performance on Saturday showed me that they are not ready to win the Premier League. They will compete for a place in the top four.”
