West Ham have received a boost as they beat Hull 5-1 in the League Cup, but their third-tier opponents can’t hold a candle to the quality offered up by Wolves.
Meanwhile, David Moyes picked a strong attacking line-up featuring the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko, Sebastian Haller, Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini, so we wouldn’t expect the Hammers to come close to that kind of output here.
Although the result against Hull may have been encouraging, Moyes and two of his players (Issa Diop and Josh Cullen) have tested positive for coronavirus, hindering their preparations ahead of this clash.
Further, co-owner David Sullivan has admitted that the club lacks the funds to sign the players Moyes wants to bring in, with that statement all but ending any long-standing interest in Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski.
Wolves To Beat West Ham
It’s understandable that defence is an area Moyes wanted to strengthen, with only the bottom-four finishers in the table conceding more goals than the Hammers last term. In fact, defeats in their opening two games to Newcastle and Arsenal this season leaves them with just the solitary clean sheet in 20 league matches now.
Even that came against relegated Norwich, while their only shutout on home turf in 17 games also came over a relegated outfit in the shape of Bournemouth.
Wolves don’t often fail to score and since the start of last season, they’ve found the net in 23 of 25 encounters with teams that finished outside the top eight.
Nuno’s men were well beaten in their last outing against Man City, though did still register a consolation through Raul Jimenez nonetheless, as there appears little wrong with their output in the final third despite the sale of Diogo Jota to Liverpool.
Wolves To Beat West Ham 2-0
Wolves went W12-D6-L2 facing bottom-half teams last season, winning seven of the last eight, though they were more effective back at Molineux where they won seven of 10 unbeaten matches and shipped just three goals.
Eight of the 10 road trips against such teams saw both teams find the net, though we wouldn’t be comfortable backing that market with Wolves winning the four head-to-heads over the past two seasons by a combined 8-0 – including 2-0 victories in both encounters last term.
Sebastian Haller endured a difficult debut season for the Hammers, but after netting twice against Hull to add to the brace against Charlton in the previous round, he was left clutching his hamstring in the closing moments of the game and at the final whistle.
He’s yet to start a league game this season and although MIchail Antonio would likely have led the line again, the 30-year-old is hardly prolific and will have to battle on his own up front against Wolves’ back three.
