It was sink or swim for Liverpool’s title aspirations against Tottenham on Thursday, but they came through the test as they ran out 3-1 winners and ended their goal drought.
However, the victory came at a cost with Joel Matip the latest centre-back to join the treatment room, suffering ankle ligament damage, which only felt like a matter of time with the former Cameroon international rather injury prone.
Fabinho missed the clash with Tottenham owing to a minor muscle complaint, though the Brazilian faces a race against time to be fit for this clash and Jurgen Klopp can’t afford to lose anyone else who can play at centre-back. It would appear that Jordan Henderson is going to have to get used to playing there, but the situation hardly convinces and hosts West Ham haven’t drawn a blank at the London Stadium since their opening day clash with Newcastle.
By contrast, the Hammers have virtually a clean bill of health, with only back-up goalkeeper Darren Randolph sidelined at present.
They’re on a roll at the moment having now won six on the bounce in all competitions, even if two of these victories were picked up over Stockport and Doncaster in the FA Cup.
Their triumph over the latter was the only one that saw them win by more than a single strike, but they’re up to fifth in the league as they trail Liverpool by just two points, as European qualification is a distinct possibility this term.
It is however worth noting that the Hammers’ past three defeats have been inflicted by Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool themselves, as they’ve largely enjoyed a kind fixture list since November.
The Reds have won seven of the past eight head-to-heads since 2017, including all three going back to the start of last season, though both teams scored in five of the last seven and this looks set to be a more even affair this time around.

Only three teams have conceded fewer goals at home than West Ham this season, though they’ve still only registered clean sheets in three of 10 matches on their own patch this term.
Despite Liverpool’s recent struggles at the sharp end, they remain the division’s highest scorers this season, but both teams to score is unappealing at the prices.
Instead, the Hammers appear worthy of getting behind on the handicap, with just one of the past four meetings seeing Liverpool win by more than a single goal.
Liverpool’s win on Thursday was just their second in eight appearances across all competitions, as the other was achieved over Aston Villa’s U23’s in the FA Cup as a bout of coronavirus at the midlands club forced a weak team selection.
This spell included dropped points against West Brom, Newcastle, Southampton and Burnley, as the win over Tottenham was just Liverpool’s second triumph in nine league trips since October.
