The Hammers have hit a downturn in form with three defeats from five winless outings across all competitions. As is so often the case for Manuel Pellegrini’s men, clean sheets have been hard to come by as they conceded 11 times over this spell without producing a single shutout.
In fact, in 24 home league games since the start of last season, West Ham have kept their opponents’ attack at bay on just six occasions, though whether or not a low-scoring Newcastle side can take advantage is another matter entirely.
The Magpies have only scored six goals from 10 appearances this season, with rock-bottom Watford the sole team to net fewer, though in fairness to Steve Bruce he can be relatively pleased with his work so far.
Given the acrimony between the club’s fans and Mike Ashley, as well as the distinctly muted and underwhelming reaction to Bruce’s arrival, residing outside of the relegation zone following a difficult opening fixture list is no mean feat.
Newcastle’s five defeats so far have come against Arsenal, Norwich, Liverpool, Leicester and Chelsea, with only the defeat away at the Canaries unexpected.
They’ve even thrown in victories over Spurs and Man Utd, so West Ham look well worth taking on when considering the London side’s poor form and odds-on price.
Indeed, excluding results against the current top five in the table, the Magpies are W2-D3-L1 this season and unbeaten in five.

The visitors may be without the suspended Sean Longstaff, while Fabian Schar is a slight injury doubt, though Bruce has six centre-backs he can call upon in his squad so should possess the resources to cope without the latter.
Meanwhile, Isaac Hayden is back from his own suspension, easing midfield concerns with Longstaff unavailable.
Pellegrini has a couple of absentees himself, but none more important than the experienced Lukasz Fabianski.
The Polish shot stopper was an ever present as he landed the club’s player of the year award last term, so it’s perhaps no surprise that West Ham’s downturn in results has coincided with his hip injury.
The West Ham boss also made five changes to the team that were beaten by Everton in their previous game when taking on Sheffield United at the weekend, suggesting that he’s not quite sure what his best team is.
His charges have also made a habit of throwing away points from winning positions, with that happening four times already this season, so Newcastle should feel optimistic of picking up a useful result here even if they fall behind.
