West Ham have enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular start to the season. They’re unbeaten since an opening day drubbing at the hands of reigning champions Man City, winning two and drawing two of the subsequent four matches, which has pushed them up to a respectable 8th place in the table and they hold the same amount of points as their weekend visitors.
Manuel Pellegrini appears quite settled in his role now and that defeat to City is in fact their sole loss in nine league outings (W5-D3-L1).
A goalless draw with Aston Villa on Monday was disappointing but they did play over 20 minutes with 10 men and in general, new signing Sebastien Haller has been a real handful for defenders, while Manuel Lanzini looks back to his best having missed the majority of last term through injury.
The 26-year-old Argentine has four assists in his last 11 outings, but his creativity is better demonstrated by his average of three key passes per 90 minutes this season that have led to shooting opportunities.
Manchester United Recent Form
Meanwhile, Man Utd’s narrow 1-0 victory hosting a plucky Leicester side was their first win since the opening day, but they’re yet to fully convince supporters that the team is heading in the right direction.
Despite holding firm, they look a bit out of sorts and were under the cosh for a lot of the game as the Foxes could boast 58% of the possession.
There was palpable relief at the full-time whistle at Old Trafford, but the Red Devils’ recent league record since mid-April reads W2-D4-L4 and they are in fact winless over their last eight away fixtures across all competitions (D3-L5).
The Draw
Notably, this fixture last season saw the hosts run out convincing 3-1 winners and they look to be in better shape than they were in the build up to that, though United were experiencing some early discontent under Jose Mourinho at that point.
However, the Hammers are yet to play a side of any real quality since the opening day and they would probably consider a draw a good result in this encounter.
Given United have finished all square in each of their past three away fixtures, all against teams outside the ‘Big Six’, we’re inclined to have a little flutter on another hard-fought stalemate.
Under 2.5 Goals
In what has been a high-scoring season thus far, highlighted by the 32-goal weekend we just witnessed, these two sides haven’t been contributing in the final third so much.
Indeed, excluding the opening day where they experienced unusual results, both sides have seen a mere eight goals across their four subsequent fixtures, while each side has seen a maximum of two goals in three of their four such outings.
Both teams have looked fairly solid at the back thus far, with West Ham putting together consecutive clean sheets in their past two outings and Harry Maguire injecting some calm into the visitors’ rearguard, so we fancy a low-scoring affair at the prices.
