Like Leicester and Wolves, Everton were expected to mount a challenge to break into the top six in the Premier League. However, while Wolves have the reasonable excuse of the additional workload that accompanies the Europa League, the Toffees have failed to live up to expectations and have suffered defeats by two-goal margins to Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Sheffield United already.
There’s been little trace of defensive solidarity as they’ve conceded at least twice in each of their past five outings across all competitions, even in victories over Lincoln and Wolves, and away from home, we certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see Marco Silva’s men concede here.
That’s especially the case as the Owls have only once failed to score from their nine fixtures this season in total, which came away from Hillsborough.
Meanwhile, Everton have kept a clean sheet in just a quarter of their 24 away matches in all comps since the start of last term under Marco Silva, going W6-D6-L12 across these matches as they haven’t exactly excelled on their travels.
By contrast, Sheffield Wednesday a fairly impressive W10-D6-L3 at Hillsborough since late November and failed to score in just three of these matches.

Despite the departure of Steve Bruce to Newcastle just weeks before the start of the season, the Owls have acquitted themselves well and hold a solid footing in the Championship, with the 13 points they’ve accumulated so far placing them at ninth in the table and only four points shy of Leeds and Swansea at the top.
They’ve taken four points from their two matches under new boss Gary Monk so far, beating Huddersfield and drawing with Fulham, so they should have enough about them to register against their visitors.
However, Marco Silva possesses too much firepower for his team to be kept at bay for the full 90 minutes and we’d expect both teams to score here.

We certainly want to get behind the hosts though. Sheffield Wednesday have won six of their last seven at Hillsborough in this tournament going back to August 2012, including a spectacular 3-0 success over Arsenal in 2015.
Meanwhile, Everton’s record in this competition is poor as they’ve only made it past the fourth round twice since the 1987-88 season, departing at the third round (the current stage) in five of the past seven campaigns.
Given Marco Silva has faced criticism for previous team selections in cup matches, it would be no surprise if he elected to rest the likes of Richarlison, Andre Gomes and Gylfi Sigurdsson, which only increases the chances of the hosts pulling off a minor upset.
