Watford In Dire Straights
Watford’s terrible start to the season just got a whole lot worse and they’ll have to dust themselves down quickly for the visit of Swansea.
Steve Cooper’s men may only have taken one point from their last two matches and dropped to second in the Championship, but they remain level on points with Leeds and should be expected to at the very least hand the Hornets a stern challenge at Vicarage Road.
The replacement of Javi Gracia with former boss Quique Sanchez Flores was supposed to breathe new life into the club, but after drawing 2-2 with Arsenal courtesy of some shambolic errors on their opponents’ part, the 8-0 drubbing at the Etihad must surely have damaged their already fragile confidence.
In fact, Watford’s only taste of victory in 12 competitive matches stretching back into April came against League One outfit Coventry in the previous round of this tournament. They lost two thirds of these games and conceded at least three times in half, so a Swansea side that have themselves netted three or more in half of their fixtures this season should fancy their chances going forwards.
Swansea In Good Form
That’s certainly the case under Steve Cooper, who likes to play attractive football and landed the Under 17 World Cup with England, though admittedly he had the likes of Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and Callum Hudson-Odoi to work with then.
However, there is attacking talent in his Swansea team and in particular Borja Baston, who has looked like the player Swansea thought they’d signed when back in the Premier League after some loan spells away to recover his form.
Swansea Draw No Bet
Given Watford’s struggles at the bottom of the league standings, it’s unclear how much emphasis new boss Quique Flores Sanchez will place on this tournament. Top flight outfits often field weaker teams in the League Cup, leading to some early exits already this season alone.
Indeed, Crawley and Sunderland beat Norwich and Burnley respectively, Colchester downed Palace on penalties, while Bournemouth required a shootout to get past Forest Green.
Meanwhile, Swansea are taking this competitions seriously if their 6-0 win over Cambridge in the last round is anything to go by, so they look highly attractive to get behind at the prices.
