After crashing out of the cup midweek thanks to a Marcus Rashford Ronaldo-esque free kick, Chelsea will be looking to bounce back when they visit Vicarage Road in Saturday’s late kick off.
Watford have some bouncing back to do themselves as they went down to a struggling Everton side midweek in a damning blow to morale.
The Blues have been in fine fettle on the road this season, winning each of their last four such games since their opening day defeat at Old Trafford and averaging four goals per game.
In fact, they also won at both Lille and Ajax in that time and so they’ve certainly proven their worth on the road this season. Despite Frank Lampard’s side’s scoring average, they have also conceded at least two in all but one of their trips in the league, where they still gave up a goal against a Southampton side wrestling with the relegation zone.
However, Quique Sanchez Flores has somewhat steadied the ship at Watford, having conceded 12 goals in the three games after inheriting this side, they have now conceded just the solitary goal from Sheffield Utd, Spurs and Bournemouth, while even that goal was controversially awarded to Mauricio Pochettino’s side, so we’re happy to avoid the ‘Over/Under’ market.
While these meetings have been typically high scoring affairs, with seven of the last eight seeing more than two goals and three seeing a minimum of five, we’re reluctant to put too much weight on history seeing as this is the first time these managers have gone to battle against one another.
Chelsea To Win
With Watford just six games off equalling the record for the longest winless start to a Premier League season and Lampard’s charges looking for a fifth straight league win, and an eighth in nine across all competitions, the visitors look reasonably priced to claim the full three points.
In fact, the Blues have won five of the last six meetings between these two sides, averaging three goals per game across those victories, which although we previously mentioned we wouldn’t put too much bearing on, a totally dominant record like that just can’t be ignored.
Chelsea -1 Handicap
They’ve also managed 24 wins from their 27 unbeaten outings against bottom-six teams since the start of 2017/18, with 15 of these coming by two clear goals and 12 by three or more.
Moreover, recent results at Wolves (5-2), Southampton (4-1) and Burnley (4-2) across their last three trips suggest they can at least put two goals between them and the Hornets, so we’re happy to go with half a point on making it four -1 handicap away wins on the bounce.
