Burnley remain in the top half of the table courtesy of a 3-0 home win over a struggling Hammers side prior to the international break, but with Manuel Pellegrini’s men having lost four of their last five winless outings now, we’d be unsure of reading too much into that success.
Indeed, West Ham have fared badly without key goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and especially from set pieces, with that of course being one of Burnley’s core strengths.
Watford even kept a clean sheet as they registered their first league victory of the campaign away at Norwich, though having conceded 23 times in 11 matches prior to that, we wouldn’t expect them to register consecutive shutouts.
This isn’t a game with goals written all over it however, as across all competitions, all but one of Watford’s last seven matches have seen fewer than three.
The exception came when they lost 2-1 at home to a Chelsea side that have seen 30 goals across their six road trips this season – six more than the next team with the highest-scoring away days (Man City).
Under 2.5 Goals
The prospects of this game producing a high output are further quashed when considering Watford’s record at home under Quique Sanchez Flores across his two spells in the dugout.
Excluding the ‘Big Six’, 11 of 15 such matches have featured a maximum of two strikes, while eight saw just the one goal or none at all, with a third of the 15 games finishing goalless in the end.
Watford And Burnley To Draw
Although Burnley have lost half of their six winless trips this season, four of these matches came versus teams currently residing in the top half of the table, and we’re a little surprised to see them at the bigger price of the two teams given how abysmal the Hornets have been.
However, seeing as the Clarets only registered four victories on their travels last season and are yet to do so this term, while Watford have drawn three of their last four at Vicarage Road – with the exception coming against an in-form Chelsea – the draw appears to hold greater potential for a payout.
