Wasps took advantage of being a Tier One side in this new format of the Champions Cup by taking apart Tier Four outfit the Dragons 24-8 on the road.
That was very much expected though, with a gulf of class separating themselves and that Welsh outfit, but they’ll still be a little concerned about their performances this term.
Indeed, that result comes after an extremely disappointing display from them at the start of the month domestically, losing out to Newcastle by 10 points here at Ricoh Arena with their full-strength side, and no doubt this next fixture will cause them a few more problems.
Montpellier currently sits in the bottom four of their domestic Top 14 league having lost five of their opening eight outings.
However, they’ve won three of their last five in that competition, and their league position is a little deceiving seeing as some teams having already played as many as 11 games, and so it’s no surprise to see them down towards the bottom end of the table.
European powerhouse, Leinster, did take them apart in their own backyard last weekend though, beating them by 21 points in the opening round of this tournament even without the likes of their key men Johnny Sexton and James Ryan starting, but it could be argued that they’re the best team in Europe alongside Exeter, and they’ll likely do that to almost every team they come across this season.
Montpellier +18 Point Handicap
Lee Blackett’s men having quite got up and running this season yet, as having reached the final at Twickenham in the English Premiership last term, they’ve lost two of their three league matches so far in the 2020/21 campaign.
That’s hardly the sort of form that should earn you huge favouritism as they do in this next European encounter and the current +18 handicap about the French side looks to hold considerable value.
Montpellier have the likes of ex-French captain Guilhem Guirado, Mohamed Haouas, Paul Willemse, Yacouba Camara and Louis Picamoles in the forwards, while they’re also littered with stars in the backs too, and for the current handicap line, we just can’t see the hosts covering it.
Moreover, it was only in their last game on the road that Montpellier beat an impressive Clermont outfit, while their trip to Toulouse back in October only saw them lose out by a mere four points.
Those are two of the best teams in France, and we’d be surprised if a misfiring Wasps side can blow them off the park.
