Recent Form
A substantial defeat to Ireland means Wales are going to be playing catch-up from here on in, and will likely have to win all four of their remaining fixtures if they want to defend their crown.
Wayne Pivac’s side went behind in the third minute and never even looked like competing with what is an incredibly tough Ireland outfit, and they’ll have to be much better here to topple a Scottish side brimming with confidence.
The Scots managed a narrow 20-17 victory over England at Murrayfield, meaning they’ve now gone W3-D1-L1 from their last five matches against Eddie Jones’ side, highlighting that their recent triumph was no flash in the pan.
Indeed, Gregor Townsend’s side have now won six of their last seven outings, despite facing all of England, France, South Africa, Australia and Japan in that time, and in truth, they’ll be bitterly disappointed to come away from Cardiff without a victory.
Wales aren’t in anywhere near as good form, winning just two of their last seven, which came against tier 2 Fiji and a heavily depleted Wallabies side. They’re going to have to find a serious performance if they want to come through this one.
Pivac would have been forgiven if he were to radically alter his side from the one that faced Ireland last week, though he’s restricted the changes to just three. They’ll be starting with two natural opensides in Taine Basham and Jac Morgan, with the latter winning his first senior international cap having impressed at regional level.
Ross Moriarty comes back into the side after a lengthy absence and the hosts will be hoping he brings with him a level of physicality that was lacking in Dublin last weekend. Owen Watkin comes in to replace Josh Adams at Outside Centre.
Scotland 1-12 Point Winning Margin
Three changes aren’t necessarily going to make the world of difference, especially when not in particularly game altering positions, and while Scotland have made five changes, the same can be said of them.
An entirely new front row, and Sam Skinner coming in to replace Jamie Ritchie shouldn’t disrupt the momentum they’ve started building, and we still see the visitors as the side that’ll be on the front foot.
Scotland haven’t won in Cardiff since 2002, though it’s fair to say that Wales have been the far superior outfit over the last 20 years, with only recently Scotland clawing their way back into the mix.
They did, however, win their last Six Nations game in Wales two years ago, albeit at Parc y Scarlets, and while its surprising to see Scotland as short as they are for this one, they’re worth siding with to get a narrow victory.
