Wales Strong Favourites
Wales open their World Cup campaign against a plucky Georgia side, though their opponents shouldn’t cause them too many worries on Monday when they meet in Aichi.
As can be expected, the Welsh are strong favourites, so there is little to be gained through backing them outright, though the handicap market piques our curiosity.
Recent Form
Warren Gatland’s men have come off a 14-match winning streak which dated back to March 2018, and saw them temporarily clinch a number one ranking, but they have been humbled since the Six Nations with three losses from four in their World Cup warm ups, including a defeat at home to the Irish as they seem to have gone off the boil at precisely the wrong time.
What’s more, their record against teams outside the tier one bracket is far from convincing. Of their 12 encounters against this weaker calibre of opposition since 2012, they’ve failed to win by a margin greater than 10 points on nine of these such occasions, and even suffering defeat in two, including a mere seven-point victory against Georgia themselves at the Principality Stadium back in November 2017.
Further weakening Gatland’s case for a drubbing, no side scored fewer tries than Wales at this year’s Six Nations and their back’s coach Rob Howley has been sent home from Japan on counts of gambling, which will cause unwarranted disruption in the camp.
Georgia +24 Handicap
Georgia have come on leaps and bounds over the years and have sparked some debate over whether or not they should be classified as a tier one nation and cause a reshuffle of the Six Nations.
Nonetheless, it would be a real shock to see them get anything from this game considering they are yet to pick up a result against a top side, though 16 wins from their last 22 is not bad going since November 2017 and they’re definitely one side to keep an eye on for the future.
