Inconsistent Form And Injury Concerns For Wales
Matching the achievement of a semi-final appearance at a major tournament was always going to be a tall order for Ryan Giggs, but Wales have been rather hit and miss under the former Man Utd player since taking charge at the start of 2018. Only one of their 13 games has ended in a draw (W5-D1-L7), with defeats to Croatia and Hungary in June leaving them in a precarious position with regards to qualification.
Absentees will also provide the Dragons with some nerves. It’s not as though Giggs is shorn of attacking talent however. Gareth Bale and Daniel James ought to be the principle threats, Sam Vokes offers plenty of experience up top, while Harry Wilson, Ben Woodburn and Tom Lawrence will all expect to be involved at some stage of proceedings.
Wales have only failed to find the net in five of their 13 games under current management, with three of these against Uruguay, Mexico and the defensively capable Denmark, and that’s despite either Bale or Ramsey being absent from the starting line-up in nine of those matches.
Bale may have seen red for Real Madrid just prior to the international break, but he has two goals and an assist from three appearances this season so far and appears ready to be a match winner again for Wales.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan have hit a rotten spell of form with four defeats from five winless outings, with all but one of these coming under Nikola Jurcevic, who was appointed in February. The stalemate came at home to Lithuania, while they’ve suffered disappointing 4-0, 2-1, 3-1 and 5-1 defeats to Kosovo, Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia respectively over this period. That does however demonstrate an ability to find the net, with young forwards Mahir Emreli and Ramil Sheydayev, as well as midfielders Dimitrij Nazarov and Richard Almeida the main threats.
Wales’ depleted backline may struggle to keep a clean sheet, especially having conceded in seven of their past 10 home games, but their attacking players should carry them to victory over a poor team in terrible form.
