The Reds will now need to turn their attention back to their main priority in Premier league football, where they remain unbeaten with 28 points from a possible 30.
Dean Smith will be pleased with his side’s recent upturn in fortunes as performances earlier in the season didn’t get the results they warranted. Villa were on a three-match unbeaten run before going down to the champions at the Etihad, though that’s not exactly any cause for concern, and their 2-1 victory over Wolves in the cup will put a spring in their step as they prepare to host the leaders.

After witnessing some makeshift sides midweek, fans should be treated to full strength sides for this one. Despite their unbeaten start, Liverpool have been less convincing in victory in recent games, having won four of their first five by at least two clear goals, they have failed to do so in any of their subsequent five, while they could be considered lucky to have come away with all three points against Sheffield United and Leicester.
What’s more, they’ve been less prolific in front of goal in the league having averaged three goals per game in their opening five fixtures, and now averaging just 1.6 since. The visitors boast the joint best defensive record in the division, though surprisingly it’s their resolve at home which has proved the most ineffective thus far, surrendering a goal in each of their five Anfield clashes, while they’ve only conceded three on the road, suggesting a low scorer could be on the cards.
Aston Villa +2 Handicap
As ever, there’s another way to address this market, with Liverpool’s dynamic front three all resting up for their midweek tie, injury induced or otherwise, they’ll be back and hungry to get amongst the goals, while Jack Grealish is expected to feature despite reports suggesting he could be out for up to a month.
Indeed, Villa’s goals per game goes from 1.27 to 1.9 when the exciting Englishman has played since the beginning of last term. All things considered though, we’re inclined to steer clear of the goals market here.
With that in mind, the handicap market appeals. Jurgen Klopp’s men have won four of their last five games by just the single goal, drawing the other at the Theatre of Dreams, while the Claret’s only defeats by more than that margin have come away from home, on the opening day when a late Harry Kane brace broke Villa hearts, and in their last outing against free scoring Man City.
Given they’re unbeaten in their last four on home turf and although the visitors will provide a stern test, we expect them to keep it relatively tight and for it to be a game of fine margins.
