Varane A Serial Winner
His big match know-how will undoubtedly come in handy, should Manchester United reach the levels that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is targeting this season.
Despite all those years at the top, Varane hasn’t had the easiest of starts to life in England, having only earned one clean sheet since his arrival.
This includes the Champions League, where he was at fault for Villarreal’s opening goal last night – pressing the Yellow Submarine too high up the field and leaving his space at the back vacant.
Thankfully for Varane, his former Real Madrid team-mate Ronaldo scored a stoppage-time winner to earn United their first win in the group stage this season.
Best Year's Ahead
At £34million, the 28-year-old centre-back should soon be reaching the peak of his career – and for a man of his talent and trophy-winning acumen, it presents a real steal.
That’s especially when compared with the other big-money defensive transfer in the Premier League this summer, Ben White’s move to Arsenal.
The 23-year-old made a £50million switch from Brighton to the Emirates – a price tag that ex-Gunners defender William Gallas cannot quite get his head around.
Bargain Price
Speaking exclusively to Genting, the former France star found the disparity in price between Varane and the relatively unproven White unfathomable.
He said: “It’s difficult for me to understand why Arsenal spent £50million on one player who is yet to prove himself at the top level.
“At the same time, Manchester United can spend less than £40million on Varane who won the World Cup and has four Champions League titles.
“He’s won the Spanish league, you have to explain to me how it’s possible, perhaps it’s partly because Ben White is English.”
Gallas, who made 142 appearances for Arsenal across four seasons, knows that White is a real prospect, but struggles to justify the fee paid for him.
“Listen, Varane is a different class player compared to White,” he explained.
“Ben White is still young and, as I said, he hasn’t proven anything yet.
“How can you put a £50million price on him, you know?
“I don’t know him, I respect him and I hope he will be a great player, but he hasn’t proven anything yet.”
No Comparison Between Varane And White
When asked if he could draw comparisons between the two summer recruits, the 84-cap international was simply unable to do so.
“You can’t compare White and Varane, I’m sorry, it’s not possible,” he said.
“And it’s not because he’s a fellow Frenchman that I’m talking like this, he comes from Real Madrid.
“He didn’t come from Brighton, with all respect to them.”
If Varane can live up to Gallas’ expectations, expect Manchester United to be challenging for the honours their supporters crave at the business end of the season.
