Recent Form

Germany have had a successful rebuild since their 2018 World Cup debacle and bottom finish in the inaugural Nations League, despite a disappointing draw with Turkey in a midweek friendly.

They were however frustrated last month as Jose Luis Gaya bagged Spain a 95th-minute equalizer and they could only muster a stalemate with Switzerland, but Joachim Low has now steered them to eight wins from 15 matches as they only lost once.

Excluding elite sides Argentina, France, the Netherlands and Spain they’re now won eight of 11 unbeaten games.

Ukraine may have lost their last two outings against Spain (4-0) and a second-string France (7-1), but they had been in good form prior to that, losing just once in 22 matches as they won 14 times.

The highlight was a 2-1 home win over Portugal 12 months ago, despite receiving a second-half red card in that encounter, though beyond that the only other heavyweight encounters were draws away to Portugal and in a friendly with Italy.

Germany To Win To Nil

You can only beat what’s in front of you and the Ukrainians have proven a tough nut to crack in home fixtures going back some time, where they’re W16-D2-L1 since November 2015.

In fact, the only sides to triumph over them on home soil going all the way back to 2012 are France (2-0), Montenegro (1-0), Slovakia (1-0), Spain (1-0) and Croatia (2-0), so we’d expect them to make their visitors work hard for the points.

Away from home, Germany have only scored more than twice in three of 12 matches since June 2017, while in the four most recent they’ve only beaten the likes of Belarus (2-0), Northern Ireland (2-0) and Estonia (3-0) in addition to a draw with the Swiss.

That leaves the win to nil looking attractive, especially given Ukraine have failed to score in 16 of their last 18 defeats at any venue.

The correct score might be worth a pop too. Eight of those losses finished 1-0 and a further six ended 2-0, but the latter appeals more given the firepower at Low’s disposal.

The Bayern and Leipzig players were rested hosting Turkey on Wednesday but will be available here, so Die Mannschaft should hold the tools to edge this one.

However, a lack of resounding away wins in recent competitive clashes with relatively weak opposition suggests opponents Ukraine, with their home record, should keep the scoring down.
