Recent Form
Jose Mourinho has a tricky first fixture but it might be a blessing to face Everton early. The Toffees have made waves in the transfer market with the acquisitions of James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, with the former two having enjoyed success under Carlo Ancelotti before.
However, the Italian won’t have had much time to knit his new-look midfield together in training just yet, so Everton could potentially be a little disjointed on matchday one.
Tottenham were much better after returning from the pause in action last term, going W5-D3-L1 since June as Mourinho appears to have used the time off well, getting his methods across to his players.
That run-in featured four wins from their final six unbeaten matches, including home triumphs over Leicester, Arsenal and Everton themselves, so it’s understandable that they start at odds-on to claim maximum points.
Indeed, Spurs have won 43 of 52 matches over the past four campaigns when hosting teams that finished eighth or below, including all seven since Mourinho arrived in the dugout.
Ancelotti will also be starting his first full season in the dugout with his current club, but the Toffees have long been poor on their travels and last season was no different.
They claimed less than a point per game away from Goodison Park, losing over half their matches, while four of their five victories came over bottom-half sides – including lowest finishers Norwich and Watford.
In fact, they lost eight of 10 trips to top-half teams, only beating Sheffield Utd, and going up against top-six finishers they’ve failed to win a single game from 24 trips across the past four seasons.
Tottenham To Beat Everton
Tottenham themselves have won five of seven home games versus Everton since 2013/14, including three of the last four, while they’re unbeaten in 15 head to heads at any venue since the start of 2013.
Everton haven’t spent 2020 in the best of form and they’re just W3-D4-L5 since late February, including losses away to Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Wolves by a combined 11-2 scoreline
Mourinho has a full bill of health with the exception of Harry Winks, who may well have started on the bench in any case following the acquisition of Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
However, Ancelotti has greater concerns with forgotten man Cenk Tosun and midfielders Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Fabian Delph all ruled out, while both Andre Gomes and Mason Holgate are doubts.
The latter proved an integral member of the defence last term, as Everton went W2-D1-L5 across their opening eight games as he warmed the bench, while they won just one of their final five matches as he again made just the single cameo appearance.
