Recent Form
The second leg of the League Cup semi-final sees Spurs try and claw back the two goal deficit from the first leg to reach their second final in a row. They’ll need to improve drastically on their performance in the first leg, and indeed at the weekend where they were 15 minutes away from exiting the FA Cup at home to Morecambe.
Chelsea made light work of Chesterfield on home soil, and another composed performance will almost certainly see them going to Wembley to face either Arsenal or Liverpool.
A 2-0 win in the opening leg was the least they deserved for their dominant display, though you can never right off an Antonio Conte side and they’ll have to be disciplined in order to see this one through.
Not only have Chelsea won all three of their visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, they are yet to concede a goal there with 1-0, 2-0 and 3-0 victories under both Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, so that’s certainly a run that Spurs will be desperate to break here.
After a string of shaky performances over the festive period, in which they went on a run of just four wins in 10 matches, they’ve started the year well with two victories and a draw with Liverpool.
Despite this small downturn in form though, they’ve still only lost one of their last 23 matches across all competitions since September.
Under 2.5 Goals
Spurs have a poor away record, winning just four of their 15 matches on the road this season, though it’s a different story on home soil, going W12-D1-L2 so far and that will certainly give them confidence heading into this.
However, it should be noted that when up against sides of real quality, namely Man City, Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool, that record changes to just W1-D1-L2 as they’re yet to prove themselves against top sides.
Thomas Tuchel has a phenomenal 81.5% win rate in domestic cup competitions when including extra time and penalties, which increases to a huge 88.1% when excluding his Mainz days.
Antonio Conte’s is still a respectable 64.2%, though there were six occasions that a game finished as all square.
Form and head-to-heads would suggest an away win is the most likely outcome here, though with Chelsea already 2-0 we’d expect them to slow the game down as much as possible and be compact, and that could very well lead to a low scoring affair.
The last thing the visitors want is an open game, and we’d expect chances to be few and far between for either side, and under 2.5 goals looks to be the way to go here.
