Recent Form
After damaging defeats to Liverpool and Leicester, Tottenham have rebounded well with two wins from three unbeaten outings.
Stoke and Leeds were both comfortably downed, while Wolves scored late on to avoid the same fate, and in their own backyard here are understandably strong favourites to advance to the final.
Jose Mourinho will know that with the Premier League an unlikely target for the season, domestic cups offer the best route to end Tottenham’s long trophy drought, as well as a quick path to silence his own critics.
He’s already won this tournament four times in his career with Chelsea or Man Utd, and his team selection in the previous round away at Stoke suggests he’ll be taking his opponents seriously.
A number of stars featured in that clash, including two of his goalscorers that day in Harry Kane and Gareth Bale, as well as the likes of first eleven picks Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier, Matt Doherty, Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg and Lucas Moura.
Tottenham have avoided major injury trouble this season, though are without injured duo Giovani Lo Celso and Bale, as well as the suspended Doherty.
However, Mourinho has the resources to pick a strong team, especially with eight days until Tottenham’s next proper test away at Villa, with an easy FA Cup tie against Marine in between.
The Lilywhites also received a slight break over the festive period with a game against Fulham postponed, while Brentford should be similarly fresh following the cancelation of their fixture with Bristol City on Saturday.
The Bees arrive in good form and are unbeaten in 16 outings since late October, as momentum has been boosted by a four-game winning streak heading into this fixture.
This run included notable triumphs over current top-five Championship outfits Reading and Bournemouth, as well as success against an admittedly negative Newcastle side in the last round.
Having also knocked out Premier League outfits Southampton, West Brom and Fulham to reach this stage, Thomas Frank’s side can’t be underestimated, even though they should fall short when facing real quality.
Both Teams To Score
It’s also impossible to ignore Tottenham’ stellar home form of late, where they’ve won seven of the past eight matches and registered six clean sheets, with six of these also seeing them triumph by at least two clear goals.
Three of these did come in the Europa League against LASK, Ludogorets and Antwerp though, while home or away Tottenham have just the single clean sheet in six appearances, so Brentford will fancy their chances of getting on the scoresheet.
One of those recent fixtures saw Mourinho’s side concede when beating Championship outfit Stoke 3-1 in the last round of this competition.
Both teams have now scored in seven of Mourinho’s last eight matches in this competition, including clashes with the likes of Hull, Burton Albion, Bristol City, Derby and most recently Stoke.
Both teams have found the net in five of Brentford’s last six matches, with the exception when facing Steve Bruce’s rather conservative Magpies.
They have a strong attacking output, scoring at least twice in seven of their past 10 appearances as they drew a blank just once.
The Bees have only lost twice in their last 25 outings, but still registered twice in both losses to Preston (4-2) and Stoke (3-2).
Both Teams To Score (Yes) At 4/5
