Australia v New Zealand
Australia will kick off their World Cup title defence in a repeat of last year’s final against New Zealand, though this time they’ll be on home soil in what will be a massive boost to Aaron finch and co.
The hosts would have wanted to enter the tournament with more momentum, though they’ve won just three of their last eight ODIs leading into this game, with two of those wins coming against a weaker West Indies side, winning just one of five against both England and India.
Similarly, New Zealand have flattered to deceive by winning just three of their recent six T20 outings, with two coming against Bangladesh meaning they won just one of four against both South Africa and Pakistan.
In the slightly longer ODI format, Australia completed a 3-0 series whitewash over New Zealand just last month, with all three victories coming in pretty convincing fashion which could be a good indicator of the level of the sides at the moment, despite the slightly different skillset required.
The Kiwis suffered a very heavy nine wicket defeat to South Africa on Monday, as the Proteas chased down their 98 total with 52 balls remains. While we’d expect Kane Williamson’s men to perform more admirably here, they’ve still lost both T20 outings at the SCG, with Australia winning seven of their 10 here and only losing to India (three times).

England v Afghanistan
England will be buoyed by their recent T20 International series victory over Australia as they bid to win their second T20 World Cup, and their first since 2009. They also won their recent warm up match against Pakistan as they head into this clash off the back of a five-match winning streak. (3 vs Pakistan, 2 vs Australia).
Afghanistan certainly shouldn’t be underestimated though with three wins from their last six (2 vs Bangladesh, 1 vs Sri Lanka), though England look likely to be too strong here.
What’s more, England played here in Perth just last week, beating Australia by eight runs, and are the clear favourites here.
Jos Buttler will be looking to lead by example here, as after a poor start as white ball captain, he’s on a bit of a run now. He managed 68 on this track last week and averages 35.86 in Australia, and looks good value to be top batsman.
