Given Switzerland’s final two matches are here versus Georgia and then on the road at pointless Gibraltar, they should feel confident of their chances of progression.
The Swiss have already beaten Georgia 2-0 in Tbilisi back in March, achieved without Xherdan Shaqiri, who remains absent from the squad.
They’ve also beaten Ireland (2-0) and Gibraltar (4-0) on home turf without the Liverpool squad player in 2019, and the lower scoreline appeals given their inability to smash teams without the talented winger.
Switzerland To Win And Under 2.5 Goals
The last time the Swiss managed to beat a decent side by more than two goals in his absence was a 4-1 success hosting Wales back in 2010, with the only teams they’ve downed by a bigger margin without him since then being San Marino, Panama and that more recent clash versus Gibraltar.
Despite only Gibraltar trailing them in Group D, Georgia aren’t miles off the pace with their eight points only four short of current leaders Ireland and Denmark.
They’ve made themselves tough to beat with home draws against both of those sides, though they did also lose to both of them on their travels.
However, given seven of their nine defeats since October 2016 have come by 1-0 or 2-0 scorelines, including five of six since October 2017, we’d expect the hosts to triumph by one of those two outcomes.
A low-scoring affair is suggested by Georgia’s recent competitive games. The last set of World Cup qualifiers and the current Euro 2020 campaign combined have seen 11 of 17 fixtures feature fewer than three goals.
Excluding their wins over Gibraltar in their current group, eight of the past nine such matches have seen a maximum of two strikes, while five of the last seven have witnessed just one goal or none at all.
Switzerland To Win 2-0
When excluding trips to Gibraltar or the Faroe Islands, Georgia last won an away qualifier back in 2005 against Kazakhstan, so it’s impossible to overlook the hosts for the win.
The visitors have lost 25 of 32 winless matches since then, with over half of those defeats coming by 1-0 or 2-0 scorelines, and so in the absence of Shaqiri we’re a tad surprised to see under 2.5 goals at odds-against.
