It’s been a tough week or so for Spurs who have now won just one of their last five Premier League outings and after it momentarily looking like they could be Liverpool’s main challengers this season, they’ve taken a bit of a reality check and now sit outside the top four having won just half their matches this season in the league.
They’ll certainly view this a means to get back on track having drawn the lowest placed team left in the competition, though it’s unclear if Jose Mourinho will take this dip in form as a sign that his players need a rest.
They now don’t play a side in the top eight in the table until they face Liverpool again in late January, though with this being the first of seven games until they play the Reds, we’d expect at least some rotation.
Stoke have had a very strong start to this season as they sit just one place outside the play-off positions, though recently a string of poor results against sides lower down the table has threatened to derail their promotion push.

They’ve gone W2-D5 up against the bottom-nine this season, and in their nine games against the bottom 11 in the league, all have seen a maximum of two strikes.
That’s a trend that was a feature of Stoke’s early season, with all nine of their opening fixtures in all competitions seeing that same outcome and while they saw some big scoring games following on from that, six of their last seven have seen just one strike or none at all and we can see this one going down a similar route.
Indeed, there are only two sides that you could argue that Spurs have put to the sword in the Premier League this season and that’s Man United and Southampton, both of whom currently operate in the upper echelons of the Premier League, though up against sides who haven’t seen as much success and that are more of Stoke’s calibre, they’ve seen much closer contests with five of their six matches against the bottom half featuring under three goals.
