Despite a Champions League final appearance back in early June, Tottenham have some serious convincing to do in Europe following their 7-2 humiliation at home to Bayern.
They trail Crvena Zvezda by just two points though, so can move up to second place in the group here with a win, and it’s just as well this game takes place on their own patch rather than on their travels where they’ve been absolutely dreadful in 2019.
However, Spurs’ last two games on home turf have been that 7-2 capitulation to the Bavarians and a 1-1 draw with a still winless Watford in the Premier League.
Dele Alli’s timely intervention in that latest result ensured Spurs avoided another defeat, though Mauricio Pochettino’s charges can consider themselves rather fortunate.
They benefited from a kind VAR decision not to award their opponents a penalty, while confusion arose when their equaliser seemed to be ruled out for handball only for the referee to overturn that decision. Time and time again they’ve found themselves exposed at the back this season as defensive solidity has gone out of the window.
Crvena Zvezda lead the Serbian Super Liga having won 10 of 11 matches and though they certainly haven’t lacked output, their domestic competition doesn’t compare favourably with the level of Spurs.
In Europe, they’ve beaten Olympiakos 3-1 at home but went down 3-0 away in Munich, while they also went down 6-1, 4-0 and 3-1 to PSG, Liverpool and Napoli respectively on the road in last seasons’ group stages.
Across all venues, they’ve trailed at the break in six of their last seven European matches at this level, being behind at both half-time and full-time in five of these.
Over 3.5 Goals
With that in mind, we wouldn’t want to take Spurs on, even if the hosts are too skinny themselves at the prices to back on current form having won just twice in 11 matches now.
However, given the nature of those defeats the Serbian outfit have suffered on the road, coupled with Spurs’ inability to keep clean sheets at present, we can certainly envisage a high-scoring encounter.
In fact, five of the visitors’ last seven group games have featured a minimum of four strikes, as they conceded at least three times on each of those five occasions.
Meanwhile, both of Spurs’ outings in this competition this season have seen at least four goals too, as in addition to the clash with the German giants they threw away a 2-0 lead at Olympiakos to finish 2-2.
Half of Spurs’ 12 matches this term have now seen no fewer than four goals, with both teams scoring in eight, and we’d expect that to occur here as well.
Heung-min Son To Score Anytime
With goals on the agenda, Heung-min Son appears well placed to capitalize at a much healthier price than teammate Harry Kane.
The South Korean looked lively upon his introduction at half time on the weekend, almost levelling the scores as he hit the woodwork, while he was Spurs’ best player in that match against Bayern and did still make it onto the scoresheet.
He’s now scored three times in his last four home games, and should be reasonably fresh having only played 45 minutes at the weekend.
