When Mourinho parachuted in at Spurs they sat 12 points behind Chelsea and it seemed a monumental challenge to surpass them into a top four spot. However, fast forward to now and they have the chance to do so here before Christmas, should they be victorious in this clash.
This closing of the gap has been a combination of Spurs’ own doing as well as Chelsea’s shortcomings. Regarding the Blues, only Watford have gained fewer points over their past five games than them, with Frank Lampard’s side possessing just the single win and four defeats as their purple patch met an abrupt halt.
Although the Lilywhites have bridged the gap and look a completely different animal to that seen earlier in the season under Mauricio Pochettino, they’ve still struggled when coming up against the bigger sides.
Mourinho’s four wins have come against West Ham, Bournemouth, Burnley and Wolves. While the latter result is by far the most impressive of his reign so far, it still required a last-minute winner from centre-back Jan Vertonghen as they were outplayed by their hosts, conceding 19 shots over the course of the match.
They also conceded 24 in their midweek defeat to Bayern, while they were fortunate not to lose by more at Old Trafford earlier in December, so Chelsea should pose some questions here.

Lampard’s youthful charges have been more impressive on the road this term than they have been back at Stamford Bridge. The 20 goals they’ve scored on their travels are only bettered by Leicester (who put nine past Southampton) and free-scoring Man City.
Meanwhile, the North London side have managed eight in their two home games under new management. Interestingly, this season, all 10 respective home and away matches played under these managers have produced a minimum of three goals, with eight producing at least four, so we’ll push the boat out a bit with the ‘Overs’ bet here.

With goals on the cards, there are cases to be made about who will net them. Tammy Abraham has proved many doubters wrong this season, especially on the road.
Only top scorer Jamie Vardy can boast more away goals than Chelsea’s number nine this season, though he’s only scored away from the Bridge against one team outside the relegation zone, so we’re hesitant to get behind the youngster until he becomes more prolific against the better sides.
Instead, it’s another Englishman who tickles our fancy. Dele Alli looks a player reborn under Mourinho and always comes alive when taking on the Blues.
The 23-year-old has six goals in his last six appearances against his London rivals, as there’s no club he’s been more prolific against for Spurs.
On his current form, with four goals in five appearances across all competitions, we wouldn’t want to bet against him finding the net here.
