Dynamic duo hold the key as Arsenal look to save season against bitter rivals
Heading into this weekend’s North London derby at Wembley, Arsenal sit a worrying four points behind their noisy neighbours, with an additional point separating them from the all-important top four spots.
That being said, this Saturday’s clash has added importance for both sides and both will be confident of their chances after encouraging performances in the league of late.
For Arsenal, they’ll enter the fray off the back of an energising 5-1 rout of Everton which had many Arsenal fans excited for the future.
After a testing January transfer window, the Gunners appear to have come out of it on top with new signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrik Mkhitaryan. They’ll hope they can produce the goods on Saturday – their history as a partnership suggests they can.
In their last league season together at Borussia Dortmund, Aubameyang scored 40 goals in all competitions, whilst Mkhitaryan racked up an incredible tally of 19 goals and 24 assists in the same campaign.
Spurs should beware of these two on Saturday, as the pair appeared to hit the ground running in pursuit of these kind of figures in red and white – Aubameyang bagged himself a goal and Mkhitaryan recorded a whopping three assists in their dismantling of Everton.
To emphasise just how impressive Mkhitaryan was further, he now sits just three assists behind many’s tip for the player of the season, Kevin De Bruyne, who leads the league in assists at 11.
If Mkhitaryan can provide this kind of service on Saturday, then Aubameyang to score anytime looks a solid pick at Premier League betting odds of 5/4.
Despite this, Spurs come into this weekend’s clash as the only team in the Premier League unbeaten in their last six, and perhaps more notably having taken a fruitful four points from their last two games against ‘Big Six’ opposition.
Astonishingly, their win against United was the only win that Pochettino has recorded in 19 games against the ‘Big Six’, a figure they’ll be keen to improve on again on Saturday.
If they are to do so, Mousa Dembele could be an integral figure. The Belgian was paramount in Spurs’ success against United and will hope to boss the midfield, where Arsenal are rich in talent.
As well as Dembele, newest ‘100 club’ member, Harry Kane, will hope to make up for a penalty miss that could have cost his side all three points at Anfield. As the second quickest player to reach the 100-goal tally, his credentials speak for themselves.
With a record crowd behind them at Wembley for United’s visit last week, Spurs will also hope to benefit from the ‘extra man’ in the stands, but we fear Arsenal’s weapons could be too hot to handle.
With Aaron Ramsey buoyed by his hat-trick against Everton, and a committed Mezut Ozil keen to stamp his authority as one of the leaders in the Gunners cavalry, we think Arsenal could save their season here at football betting odds of 5/2 to take home all three points.
