Following a stalemate away to struggling Arsenal and wins over bottom-two outfits Watford and Norwich at St. Mary’s, Southampton succumbed to a late winner at Newcastle.
However, with those home victories against fellow bottom-six sides under their belt, they’ll be glad to have another crack of the whip when 16th-placed West Ham visit the south coast.
Indeed, Manuel Pellegrini’s men arrive in terrible form having now lost seven of their past nine fixtures as they conceded at least twice in each defeat.
That sequence of results has left them just one point ahead of the two teams directly below them, with Aston Villa and their opponents Southampton in 17th and 18th respectively.
A defeat here would probably see the Chilean coach relieved of his duties, while a point may not even be enough to stave off the sack unless there are serious signs of improvement.
With the Hammers unable to defend properly, the Saints must fancy their chances of finding the net here. That’s especially the case given they’ve done so in all but one of their last 15 fixtures, as the exception came in that 9-0 thrashing Leicester handed to them back in October.
In fact, that schooling was the only home match in which they’ve failed to score since Hasenhuttl took the reins. The south coast side have netted twice in three of their last four fixtures, though clean sheets have been hard to come by and both teams have now scored in 10 of their past 11 matches.

The continued absence of key goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski should help Southampton’s cause further, even if David Martin hasn’t been the disaster that Roberto proved to be between the sticks.
We can’t quite trust the Saints to take maximum points however, particularly as odds-on favourites and with the Hammers having done the double over them last term. However, there could be some value in backing main marksmen Danny Ings to grab another goal against this rocky defence.
The former Liverpool striker has been in fine fettle of late. When playing more than a single half, he’s scored 10 times from as many games dating back into September across all competitions, finding the net at least once in nine of these fixtures in total.
The 27-year-old is easily the club’s top scorer with his 11 strikes in all tournaments this season nearly three times as many as the next best, James Ward-Prowse, who only has four to his name.
