Southampton have lost six of their last eight winless matches and though they’ve had some tough fixtures, the manner in which they’ve capitulated will be of concern to Ralph Hasenhuttl.
They’ve conceded at least twice in all but one of these games and 25 times in total, while at St. Mary’s alone this season they’ve lost five of six winless matches and shipped 21 goals.
The situation for Watford is even more dire as they’ve accumulated one point fewer than the Saints and prop up the table.
Even though they picked up their first win of the season in their last away match at Norwich prior to the international break, they were brought crashing back down to earth upon their return as Burnley inflicted a 3-0 defeat on them at Vicarage Road.
That scoreline was a tad harsh on the Hornets having been the better side during the opening half however.
Meanwhile, Southampton will also be disappointed not to have come away with more in their last outing away at Arsenal, despite picking up a 2-2 draw, as they had the chances to win the game.
Despite some slim glimmers of hope for both managers though, it’s hard to get behind either team and the draw represents the most likely outcome.
Southampton And Watford To Draw 1-1
Indeed, excluding their capitulation at Burnley and a recent defeat to Chelsea, Watford have drawn three of four outings against Sheffield United, Spurs and Bournemouth since the start of October.
The last three head-to-head league fixtures between Southampton and Watford have ended in score draws, with both encounters last season ending 1-1. Given both sides have scored in five of six encounters since 2016/17, it would come as no surprise if the correct score lands again.
In fact, each of Southampton’s last eight stalemates have seen both teams register on the board, with six of them finishing 1-1.
Meanwhile, nine of Watford’s 13 draws since the start of last season have featured at least one goal from either side, as six ended in the same exact scoreline.
Although this could be quite a tense affair down at the bottom, both sides will want to show some attacking ambition to take the points, as both seek to pull away from their current perilous circumstances.
