Recent Form
Manchester City are on the longest active league winning streak in all of the English football leagues, they are currently on 12 wins in a row and the longest achieved is 18 which is shared by Liverpool (2019/20) and Manchester City (2017).
For a team of Man City’s stature they have three easy games coming up in Southampton, Brentford and Norwich where they will hoping to carry on the streak to 15 and edge closer to breaking that record, and you’d be a brave man to bet against them closing that gap here.
The only two teams that have a real chance of stopping breaking the record are Tottenham (game 16) and their Manchester rivals (18).
James Ward-Prowse has cemented himself as one of the best freekick takers to ever play in the Premier League, with 12 goals from direct freekicks already in his career there is only one man that has scored more, David Beckham. Although that goal was the highlight of the game, it didn’t change the outcome against Wolves where it eventually finished 3-1.
These teams are some of the only ones to not be heavily affected by Covid, injuries or AFCON players. Riyad Mahrez and Moussa Djenepo are the only African players missing and the only starter missing from the two teams is the Saints’ Mohamed Elyounoussi. Southampton would have been hoping for a slightly weakened side to give them a fighting chance of coming away with a result, but it’s not looking hopeful.
After scoring 17 goals in the space of three games, the Citizens have slowed down a bit with only four goals from their last three matches, with two of the games finishing with by narrow 1-0 scorelines.
That could be a sign of their dominance withering, though managing to grind out results when it gets tough shows just how much character the Champions have.
Once we take into account that Ralph Hassenhutl held City-to-nil in a 0-0 draw at the Etihad, we could be looking at upset on the cards although it is very unlikely.
+11.5 Match Corners
Manchester City have played eight games against teams floating around in the middle third of the table (8th-14th), Southampton being one of these teams, against these teams City have won half by a margin of one goal (4/8).
You could definitely find value in this considering the odds are currently around 4 but our main bet is going to be based around corners.
City have had the most amount of corners in the PL so far with an average of 8.5 per game for them alone, Southampton currently rank fifth with an average of 5.9 per game.
Southampton are a team that play for set-pieces because of JWP proven excellence from them.
They like to take shots from range in the hope of either scoring or getting a corner. In their last game, a 3-1 loss against Wolves they managed 10 corners and in the 0-0 draw these two played out at the beginning of the season there were 13 match corners.
