Back-To-Back Wins For Southampton
It seems Southampton’s victory over fellow south coast side Brighton was just what they needed. The Saints lost back-to-back matches against both Burnley and Liverpool, before turning that form right around and beating the Seagulls and then Fulham in their midweek League Cup match.
It should be noted however that they gave the Reds a run for their money due to Adrian’s mistake gifting them a goal and a potential route back into that game, while their victory over Graham Potter’s side owed a lot to a 30th-minute red card for Florin Andone.
United Form Under The Spotlight
In contrast, Man Utd’s seasons is going exactly the opposite way. They started on such a high note with a 4-0 dismantling of Frank Lampard’s Chelsea at Old Trafford, before an unfortunate stalemate at Molineux after Paul Pogba missed a penalty, while that got worse last weekend as they suffered their first ever Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace thanks to a 93rd-minute winner from Patrick van Aanholt.
That now means that since that amazing European night in Paris back in March, the Red Devils have gone W3-D3-L9 from 15 games across all competitions, including five defeats from seven winless outings on the road as one of those stalemates came against relegated Huddersfield.
The Draw
If we go back to the start of the 2013/14 season then the head-to-head record between the two across all competitions reads W6-D5-L2 in United’s favour.
That includes draws in two of their last three at St Mary’s, with the only three-pointer going the way of Man Utd courtesy of an 88th-minute winner. It’s certainly set to be a game of tight margins but also we’re expecting there to be goals, especially with Solskjaer’s men looking very exposed without Luke Shaw at the back.
Diogo Dalot has occasionally filled in at left-back but is currently sidelined himself, Ashley Young is the likely replacement but is ageing and has never truly convinced from a defensive standpoint in any case, while Marcos Rojo appears to have left the scene completely.
In fact, they’ve conceded 54% more goals per game on average in the 56 matches Young has started since the beginning of the 2017/18 season, compared with the 23 games he hasn’t, whilst their clean sheet percentage drops from 57% to 25% when he’s taken to the field.
