It’s been a long time since South Africa, with their side last taking to the field in March where they beat Australia 3-0 in their ODI series, a result which sees them now fifth in the ODI rankings despite playing less matches than any of the top nine.
While that win would have been a confidence booster, their T20 form is questionable as they lost both series this year 2-1 at the hands of England and Australia.
They also drew their previous T20 series with India in September last year, so we wouldn’t expect them to come into this with much confidence.
While it’s difficult to assess South Africa’s form or state of mind as a unit considering they haven’t played for so long, the IPL is the best form indicator that we could have.
In that regard, there’s little stopping Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje as they were they key factors in Delhi’s run to the final, though there are still question marks around the batting line up over who will partner Quinton de Kock at the top end.
England To Beat South Africa
England managed to beat the number one T20 side in the world back in September to follow on from their victory over South Africa earlier in the year.
England almost certainly have the strongest side, and although some of the South Africans were the standout performers of this year’s IPL, that‘s not to say the English weren’t at the races.
Ben Stokes had a delayed start to the series but was extremely effective for the Royals, as was Jofra Archer who was effectively carrying the bowling attack by himself.
South Africa may be slightly out of touch, and with England having played more international cricket than any other side this year, we’ll back them to get the victory in the first T20 at the least.
