This T20 series seems to be over before it’s even begun. England currently lead the three match series 2-0, scraping over the line in their Sunday match with a ball to spare, despite needing just three off the final over.
Dawid Malan’s 50 was the deciding factor in an ultimately tight encounter, though it proves that England have match winners in all departments and it’s tricky to envisage anything other than a 3-0 whitewash from this series.
The fact that this is effectively a dead rubber means that both sides have the freedom to rotate and try out some of their fringe players.
However, with this being the first bit of international cricket for the Proteas since February, we expect they’d stick with more or less the same line up to get more game time under their belts.
England may opt to chop and change, with the most likely player to come into the side being 26-year-old Reece Topley who could replace Tom Curran, though we’d ultimately expect them to keep a lot of their superstars in the side and try and get a 3-0 whitewash.
South Africa To Win
England have won five of their last six unbeaten T20 Series now, not including two victories in one off T20 matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in that time, so they’re in serious form and will hope to keep that going over the next year in the build up to the World Cup.
They’ve also still never lost a T20 series to the South Africans, and the last two have finished 2-1 to the English as they’ve never completed a 3-0 series win.
Seven of England’s last eight Series since they played South Africa in 2015 have seen the opposition win at least once, and with the One Day series starting later this week, we wouldn’t blame England for having an eye on that one.
South Africa caused problems in the last match and fell just short, and although England have proved they are the stronger team, there’s a case to be made for South Africa being the more determined side here on a pitch that welcomes bigger totals, so at a far longer price we’re happy to get behind the hosts for a consolation victory.
