Recent Form
Sheffield Utd produced a second-half comeback on Sunday after deservedly going into the break a goal down following Alexander Tettey’s opener, but a man of the match performance from George Baldock saw them execute the fightback to end a four-game winless run.
It should be noted though, that three of those four outings were stalemates with Spurs, Man Utd and Wolves, so it’s hardly been a disastrous run.
Villa were thumped by Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester in their last outing, who’ve now won eight games on the bounce. Dean Smith’s men have recorded back-to-back defeats following that result, while they’re just W1-D1-L5 from seven matches since late October.
The most concerning factor has been their form on the road, with their four points from eight trips the joint-lowest in the league alongside Everton and Norwich, as their sole victory came against the latter.
However, the Canaries are the only bottom-half outfit that they’ve faced on their travels this season. Across all venues against those weaker sides, they’ve won an outstanding four of their last six unbeaten outings, including each of the last three by an aggregate scoreline of 9-2 and the hosts look a little short for us in the outrights.
Sheffield United And Aston Villa To Draw
The Blades have been a hard team to beat this season though, with only Leicester, Liverpool and Wolves losing fewer games than them, while only the latter outfit have experienced more stalemates.
However, Chris Wilder’s men would only be 15th in the table on fixtures at Bramall Lane alone, as over half their points this term have come on the road.
Wins hosting Arsenal and Burnley here over the last two months is promising, while they took the game to Man United when drawing with them at the end of last month, but a 2-0 defeat in their last one here against the Magpies is of some concern.
That game was perhaps closer than the scoreline suggested though, with the Blades dominating possession and conceding a controversial second goal.
Matt Targett and Tyrone Mings are likely to be out for the visitors and that alone poses some issues at the back for them. Couple that with defeats against the Blues and the Foxes in their last two outings and we’re not overly keen to back them for the victory, but the draw looks the best bet.
Since the start of November Villa may have lost two of three winless trips, but each of those defeats came by one-goal margins to Wolves and Chelsea, while they grinded out a draw at Old Trafford and they look resolute enough to earn a point.
