Familiar Foes
These two are familiar foes having faced each other in the group stages in each of the past two seasons, with Man City coming out on top as they won three of the four encounters. Last term they won by a combined score of 9-0 and so it’s easy to see why the visitors are short priced favourites.
However, the hosts shouldn’t be entirely discounted. English sides are a poor W1-D1-L4 away to Shakhtar in the Champions League this century, as Man City’s win here last season was the first defeat the Ukrainians have suffered.

With that in mind, we can certainly envisage Shakhtar registering a goal, even if it only proves to be a consolation in the end. They’ve scored at least four times in each of their past three domestic games, while in Europe last term they saw both teams find the net home and away against decent outfits Lyon, Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt.
In fact, they’ve scored in all but two of their 17 home games in European action since March 2016, even if nine of these came in the Europa League, registering two or more in 14 of these games, so they’ll fancy their chances of getting at a weakened backline.
Indeed, Man City have kept just four clean sheets in 21 away games in this competition since 2015/16. Further, although Otamendi’s horror pass this weekend will have opposition fans laughing their heads off, a momentary lapse in concentration like that pales in comparison to the clear issue Man City have when defending set-pieces.
Eight of the last 11 league goals they’ve conceded have now come via that route, and while Shakhtar may not have much chance of playing City off the park, any side has the capability to score from a corner or free-kick.

Despite unexpectedly losing at the weekend, City still scored twice in that game, which is the minimum number of goals they’ve scored in all five Premier League matches to date.
Only Liverpool in the Community Shield limited them to one strike, with Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero already on six and seven goals for the season respectively.
Such is the firepower at their disposal that it’s hard to imagine them being outgunned, and so the away win and both teams to score appears profitable.
