Recent Form
This match was previously cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it was always going to be difficult for the national side because whilst we have seen players like Zinchenko, Yarmolenko and Mykolenko all flourish for their Premier League sides it must be tough to play football at their highest level when there are atrocities going on back in their homeland.
Both have a chance to go to the World Cup Finals, something Scotland haven’t achieved since 1986. The Tartan Army will have to win back-to-back games in order to get there but they are as close as they have ever been. If they manage to get the better of Ukraine here, they will face Wales to decide which team gets the spot in group B with England, USA, and Iran already securing their places in the finals.
These two sides have only come up against each other twice before, back in 2006 and 2007 when Ukraine still had their footballing icon, Andriy Shevchenko. Both sides won a game apiece but considering how long ago this was it doesn’t really pose an accurate reflection of what the two sides can do today.
Dating back to the 24th of March last year, Ukraine have been on a long drawing streak with six stalemates from their last eight games with the other two exceptions being wins, meaning that they are technically unbeaten over this period but an excessive amount of draws doesn’t get you where you need to be, and neither side will want the lottery of penalties to come into the equation here, so we’d expect both sides to be pushing to get over that line.
Both Teams To Score
Out of those eight fixtures played, two were against France and both resulted in a 1-1 draw. These results are a good indicator of how this team can hold on despite playing a team with vastly better players, resources and staff, and while Scotland don’t nearly pose the capabilities of the French, they have proven tricky to beat in recent times.
Both teams to score has come off in seven of Ukraine’s last eight matches but this same bet only managed to win in three of Scotland’s last ten competitive fixtures. It must be said that four of these outings were against Moldova and the Faroe Islands which Scotland beat four times all-to-nil. If we exclude these games (because of the breadth of quality between the two teams) you can see that BTTS came off in three of their last six against competitive sides (Austria, Israel and Denmark).
PREDICTION:
BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
