What Happened In The Opening Round

It was a tough opener for the Scottish fans as they watched their side get trounced by Ireland upfront and go down by 24 points.

To make matters worse they also lost both Hamish Watson and Ali Price to injury in the process and that will no doubt hinder their chances of advancing from this group.

Samoa can count themselves lucky to have not lost two players to red cards in the first half against Russia. Indeed, Romain Poite deemed the collisions to have mitigating circumstances and only yellow cards were given, although they’re currently being cited for those challenges.

However, the Samoans still went in at the break down 6-5 to the 20th ranked team in the World, Russia, and although they did turn it on eventually in the second half to win 34-9 and secure the bonus point, there’ll be concerns surrounding that woeful first half against a side that lost to England Championship side Jersey Reds on home soil, as well as the Italians by a 70 point margin in their World Cup warm-ups.

Head-To-Head Encounters

These two nations have met on nine occasions over the last 20 years and it’s Scotland that have dominated them, winning all but one of their nine ties. However, none of the last six meetings have seen more than 10 points separate the sides, with Scotland’s biggest margin of victory being seven points back in 2005, while their World Cup fixture was a close knit 36-33 win for the Northern Hemisphere outfit.

However, it should be noted that they were coming off the back of a gruelling defeat to the Springboks in that fixture and when the Islanders have gone up against other Six Nations sides since that defeat four years ago, they’ve taken Wales to the wire in Apia (the Welsh lost 10 players to illness), while both France and England took them to the cleaners by at least 34 points.

Scotland -16 Point Handicap

Scotland have had the advantage of two days extra rest for this encounter and they’ve won 15 of their 17 matches with tier two opposition since November 2013, as 10 of these were by more than 16 points, including four of their five victories under Gregor Townsend.

In fact, they blew away Georgia recently both home and away in their final preparation games before the World Cup and with the Georgians ranked four places higher than Samoa in the World Rankings, we’ll side with Scotland to bounce back impressively from that miserly opening performance.

Scotland -16 Point Handicap At 19/20
