BOOSTED ODDS FOR THE CHAMPIONS CUP AVAILABLE HERE!
Opening Weekend Results
Having opted to not appeal their domestic points deduction, Saracens will no doubt be putting all their resources into avoiding relegation in the English Premiership.
However, Mark McCall hinted at the return of some of his World Cup stars for this one in his post-match interview following their 30-10 defeat to Racing 92 last weekend.
Ospreys were made to pay for the absence of their own key players out in Japan, with a heavy 32-13 defeat at the hands of Munster.
Of course, the Irish side had their internationals back which unsurprisingly paid dividends, but Johann van Graan won’t be worried one bit if it was a full strength or weakened Welsh outfit they played, with the five points all he cares about.
Plenty At Stake For Both Teams
Heading into round two both these clubs now sit pointless at the bottom of Pool 4 and another defeat for either of them will mean a huge uphill battle to reach the knockouts.
In fact, the reigning champions will know that defeat in their own backyard against what is understood to be the weakest side in this pool, and they may as well void the European competition for the season, with their priorities elsewhere.
Saracens Home Record
Only Northampton, Leicester, Clermont and Exeter have downed Sarries at Allianz since 2017 in both the Premiership and Champions Cup, winning 31 of their 36 fixtures in that time and we don’t give the visitors a hope of adding to that list of four sides, especially since three of those defeats to saw them go to battle without the likes of Maro Itoje, Billy Vunipola, Jamie George and Owen Farrell.
We don’t expect all of them to return to the starting line-up for this one though, but nonetheless they’ve still won by more than 22 points in over half those home victories and so this could be the game to get them back on track.
Saracens -20 Points
Ospreys will have to wait another week before welcoming back their internationals with Wales facing the Barbarians this Saturday, which in fact makes them worse off than when being hammered by the Red Army last weekend, as they at least had Bradley Davies, Aled Davies and Nicky Smith to call on from the bench.
Indeed, they’re just W1-L6 this term in their absence now, including heavy defeats at Ulster by 24 points and Leinster by 50 in their toughest trips and it’s hardly going to get any easier against the reigning champions, Saracens.
Moreover, earlier this year when the Welsh outfit last lost their key players to the Six Nations, they were thrashed by Connacht 46-5 and so we’re confident that’ll be the case again.
