Results So Far

After a disappointing result in South Africa’s opener against the reigning World Cup campions New Zealand, they’ve since bounced back with a comfortable 54-point victory over 23rd in the World Namibia.

Meanwhile, the Italians who currently sit at a lowly 14th in the rankings have maximised their points from the opening two rounds over Namibia (47-22) and Canada (48-7).

Italy Struggled Against Tier One Nations

That last outing for Conor O’Shea’s men was a much more promising performance with the likes of Matteo Minozzi proving his class with a try in the dying minutes to cap it off, while Jake Polledri made more carries (16) and beat more defenders (14) than any other player on the pitch.

Obviously, this is going to be a completely different contest for them though with the Springboks second favourites to lift the William Webb Ellis Cup on 2nd November.

Indeed, against such Tier 1 sides the Italians have lost 25 straight matches since 2017, as nine of those were by more than the 28-point handicap.

That isn’t a very large proportion of hammerings to those sides but if we look at their results against the three heavyweights England, New Zealand and South Africa since O’Shea took over back in March 2016, then they’ve lost six of their eight encounters by more than the handicap line, even with five of those occurring in their home country.

South Africa –28 Point Handicap

Of course, one of those anomalies was when they upset the Boks in Florence three years ago. However, Rassie Erasmus’ men lost all their Autumn internationals that year and have come a long way since.

So much so that they got their own back on the Azzurri with a comfortable 29-point victory just 12 months later and looking at the quality of the side the coach has opted for this Friday, we’re struggling to see how Italy are going to stay with them.

The most exciting part about this South African line-up is the inclusion of Cheslin Kolbe. The winger made an incredible 124 of his sides’ 370 metres in their blockbuster clash with the Kiwis and he’ll no doubt unlock this Italian defence with ease.

Add the likes of Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard and Faf de Klerk to the starting line-up in the backs as well as a complete overhaul in the forwards from their dominant victory over Namibia and it starts to look very worrying for the Azzurri.

South Africa –28 Point Handicap At 19/20
