Boks Looking To Equal The All Blacks Record

Having backed a final between these two at the beginning of the tournament, we’re pleased to see them both make it this far in what will be their first World Cup meeting since that 2007 final at Stade de France, which South Africa went on to win.

The Springboks currently hold two World Cup titles and will be looking to equal New Zealand’s current record of three with a win this Saturday.

To get to this point they’ve beaten all of Namibia, Italy, Canada and Japan by a minimum of 23 points in each, while they grinded past Wales in their semi-final fixture by a narrow three-point margin.

They have in fact already been defeated this tournament though, coming in their opener against the All Blacks by just 10 points.

Interestingly, that victory last time out against Warren Gatland’s men saw them make as many as 39 kicks, which is the most they’ve made in a single World Cup outing since that 2007 final with the Red Roses (48) and so we hardly expect them to diverge from their usual tactics that Rassie Erasmus has engrained into his side for the showpiece event.

Superb England

England on the other hand, have spectacularly seen off all of Tonga, USA, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand to get this this point, with their last performance a complete domination of Steve Hansen’s men as the Kiwis’ solitary try came from an overthrow by England’s Jamie George to allow Ardie Savea to flop over the tryline.

Other than that, the South Hemisphere outfit didn’t have a look in all game thanks to some blistering defence from Eddie Jones’ men and they’ll likely bring a similar if not more physical game to this final.

Head-To-Head Results

Since both coaches have been in charge, the current head-to-heads read two wins a piece, with the Boks winning that series down in South Africa in June last year 2-1, although Jones did get his revenge in the final Test of that tour, while he backed that victory with another in their most recent meeting at Twickenham almost a year ago to the day, winning 12-11.

England 1-12 Point Winning Margin

Erasmus’ charges against fellow top three sides in the World Rugby Rankings New Zealand and England, have won just three of their eight such outings since he took over in March 2018, though all but one of those saw fewer than 12 points separate the sides, while the one anomaly was when England salvaged a 15-point victory thanks to the rotation of Handre Pollard to the bench. Jones’ men against similar top sides have won half their six meetings in that time period, as all but that same game coming within that 12-point threshold.

In fact, they’ve now won three of their last four such games with their sole defeat a controversial one against the All Blacks at the home of rugby back in November and they look the side to get behind for this one.

Considering no side has ever won this tournament having lost a pool stage match as well as no team has done the Rugby Championship and World Cup double, everything is pointing towards the Northern Hemisphere outfit.

Moreover, Jerome Garces isn’t exactly a lucky charm with them Boks as they’ve lost 10 of their 15 matches he’s officiated, while England have lost just two of seven with him since 2016.

The winning margin looks the way to go too seeing as five of the last seven Rugby World Cup finals have been separated by fewer than 10 points.

England 1-12 Point Winning Margin At 11/8
