BOOSTED ODDS FOR THE EURO 2020 QUALIFIERS AVAILABLE HERE!
Sweden Can Qualify With The Win
Spain are out in front on their own in Group F, but these two sides are at this stage the main contenders to take the runners-up spot and qualify for Euro 2020, although Norway aren’t out of the picture with their final two games coming against minnows Malta and the Faroe Islands.
Sweden can secure their status with a win here, though given they host the Faroes Islands on the final day, while Romania have to travel to Spain, they’ll probably still make it through the group as long as they secure a point here.
For Romania then, this is must win territory to give themselves a sporting chance. However, although they’ve dispatched Malta and the Faroes Islands with relative ease, as well as holding their own in a pair of stalemates with Norway, both of the defeats they’ve suffered have come at the hands of Spain and Sweden.
Recent Form
Romania can boast an impressive W11-D5-L2 record since the start of 2018, though aside from those defeats against Spain and Sweden, the majority of the teams they’ve faced have been of mediocre quality at best.
They did however beat Sweden themselves and Chile in friendlies towards the beginning of this spell, though the former didn’t put out their strongest team, while the South Americans were without the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal and went down to 10 men just 30 minutes into the contest.
Romania’s hopes have also been dashed by the team news. Veteran captain Cristian Sapunaru retired from the international scene in June, while fellow centre-backs Vlad Chiriches and Dragos Grigore (who have 57 and 37 caps respectively) are both out injured.
Former Spurs and Napoli centre-half Chiriches adds a touch of class and is particularly influential on the rare occasions when he’s fit to play, though the absence of the trio of centre-backs should hit them hard in terms of experience, with only three of the eight defenders in the squad possessing more than 10 caps.
Sweden To Win
Further forwards it’s a similar story. Midfielders Alexandru Maxim (39 caps), Alexandru Chipciu (46) and Gheorghe Grozav (29) have all failed to make the cut for this squad, with each of those three having contributed a minimum of five goals in national team colours.
That will mean that Nicolae Stanciu, Claudiu Keseru and the promising George Puscas will have to largely carry the team, and the greater wealth of experience within Sweden’s ranks should swing this result in favour of the visitors.
