United were briefly threatened in the first leg as they were 2-1 down at half time, but a five-goal haul in the second period has surely put this tie to bed.
It remains to be seen just how strong a team Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will put out, but with the Red Devils’ weekend clash versus Liverpool postponed, tired legs shouldn’t be such an issue and we wouldn’t expect a mere second-string side.
By contrast, Roma boss Paulo Fonseca does have his hand forced with the treatment room piled high at present.
Indeed, he lost the trio of goalkeeper Pau Lopez, defensive midfielder Jordan Veretout and winger Leonardo Spinazzola during the first half of last week’s encounter alone.
Lopez’s replacement Antonio Mirante hardly covered himself in glory and so Daniel Fuzato was handed his first start of the season at the weekend in a 2-0 defeat to Sampdoria, though he too found himself at fault and so none of the options between the sticks are convincing.
Beyond that, attacking duo Stephan El Shaarawy and Pedro are sidelined, while young starlet Nicolo Zaniolo hasn’t featured at all this season as the 21-year-old continues to battle back from a pair of ACL injuries.
The visitors are only without Phil Jones and Anthony Martial, neither of whom would make the cut if Solskjaer picked his best team in any case.
Man United To Beat Roma
Although Roma will be seeking to restore some pride with nothing else to play for this season, while United don’t exactly need to push the boat out for the win, Solskjaer’s team look attractive at the prices given the injuries their hosts are currently enduring and the form in which they find themselves.
Roma have now failed to win in six appearances, losing four of the past five, which includes defeats to bottom-half outfits Torino and Cagliari domestically as they’ve fallen completely out of the picture for European football next term.
United have endured a number of draws against top-half sides domestically this term, but that isn’t unduly concerning when considering Roma’s record in the big games.
Up against the six teams above them domestically, as well as Ajax and Man Utd in Europe, the Italian outfit have been found wanting and are a desperately poor W1-D3-L7 since late November, as all but one of those defeats came by a minimum two-goal margin.
Moreover, Man Utd have won six of seven unbeaten matches now, and have already won in Italy this term as they travelled to Milan, so should be too hot for a demoralized and depleted Roma to handle.
