Recent Form
Inter are on a roll at the moment and have won eight of 10 unbeaten games in all competitions, as only Juventus and AC Milan were able to deny them maximum points. They scored at least twice in all of these victories, winning by an exact two-goal margin on seven occasions, as five of them finished 2-0.
Roma suffered defeat to Bologna last time out and are now six points adrift of fourth-placed Atalanta.
Prior to that result, their form had been improving with consecutive victories over Genoa, Zorya and Torino as they kept clean sheets in each, but the latest setback leaves them a poor W4-D2-L5 since the October international break in all competitions.
All but one of Roma’s eight league wins this season have come against teams currently in the bottom half of the table, with three of them coming against the teams mired in the relegation zone.
They’re just W1-D1-L5 when facing the top-half sides as the sole victory came over Fiorentina on the opening day of the season, and although Nicolo Zaniolo saw red in that game early in the second half, the Viola were also down to 10 men after just 17 minutes in that encounter.
Jose Mourinho will welcome the return of Bryan Cristante after the midfielder made an appearance from the bench midweek following a bout of covid, though star playmaker and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini will be out for the rest of the year having been injured in their previous game against Torino.
Inter Milan To Win
Since the start of last season, Roma have lost 29% of their 41 league games where Pellegrini has played at least 60 minutes, compared to %50 of the 12 matches where he played less.
That includes a W2-D1-L5 record across the last eight of these, and Roma will be losing a potent goal threat with Pellegrini their joint-top scorer alongside Tammy Abraham in all competitions this season.
Right wing-back Rick Karsdorp is also suspended, so 20-year-old Bryan Reynolds is in line for a rare start. 18-year-old Felix Afena-Gyan has been fairly prolific for the reserves and recently opened his account for the seniors with a brace against Genoa, but the impressive youngster won’t feature either having been struck down with covid.
Simone Inzaghi isn’t without any injury concerns of his own, though it’s fair to say he has a deeper squad to draw upon.
Denzel Dumfries can expect to continue at right wing-back in the absence of Matteo Darmian, while left-sided player Federico Dimarco must surely fill in at centre-back once more with Andrea Ranocchia and Stefan de Vrij unavailable, though Alessandro Bastoni should return to replace Danilo D’Ambrosio at the back.
Inter are unbeaten against Roma in eight head-to-heads over the past four campaigns, and although six of these finished in stalemates, the Nerazzurri were triumphant in the most recent meeting back in May.
The visitors are certainly in the better form, taking them just two points off the top of the table, and Roma’s record against the better sides this term would suggest it should be a long afternoon for the Giallarossi.
PREDICTION:
INTER MILAN TO WIN
