Recent Form
Following a respectable 2-1 loss to PSG in the Trophée des Champions at the start of August – a match between the winners of Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France from the previous season – Rennes started their league campaign brightly with three straight victories.
That includes one over the Parisians in Ligue 1 a month ago, though a defeat hosting Nice and a draw away at Brest in their last two outings has halted the momentum slightly.
However, on home turf they rightly start as favourites in their opening clash in Group E and across all competitions, the hosts are W12-D7-L2 at Roazhon Park since early December, with Lyon the only other side apart from Nice to triumph over them.
Rennes To Win
Celtic may have won their last six games on the trot by a combined score of 14-3 across all competitions, including an aggregate 6-1 win over AIK in the final set of Europa League play-offs.
However, Rennes are a step above the Swedish outfit, while the Hoops’ narrow 1-0 win over Hamilton this past weekend was hardly what we’ve come to expect from the current eight-time Scottish champions.
Neil Lennon had complaints over the state of the pitch and the windy conditions, but in truth Celtic are capable of much better.
Domestic results haven’t had too much bearing on their European adventures in recent times though. Excluding play-off matches where they’ve often encountered much weaker teams, as well as Champions League group stage matches where they’ve squared off against the likes of Man City, PSG, Bayern and Barcelona, Celtic are just W4-D3-L9 in Europe since 2015/16 as three of those victories came on home turf.
To be fair, they did find the net in 12 of the 16 games in total, including over half the losses, so we could easily see them scoring in defeat.
Rennes To Win 3-1
Rennes made it as far as the last 16 before narrowly going down 4-3 over two legs against Arsenal last season, with a W3-D1-L1 record in their home games including a 3-1 win over the Gunners. Both teams scored in four of these five matches, and given three of their last four home wins in any tournament have come by that same scoreline, with the other ending 2-1, it appeals at what looks an inflated price.
