Recent Form
Real Madrid are accustomed to European success but they’re currently third in their group and staring down the barrel of an early exit.
All four teams still stand a chance of a top-two finish as no one has yet booked their place in the Champions League knockouts, so there’s plenty riding on both matchday six fixtures.
The pressure is of course on Real Madrid as European royalty, especially given a point for current group leaders Gladbach will see them through.
However, Marco Rose’s side aren’t built to defend and they’re often involved in high-scoring, entertaining clashes. With that in mind, we’re not confident they’ll take a ‘park the bus’ approach, let alone be able to implement such a strategy.
Over 3.5 Goals
A massive nine of the German outfit’s past 11 matches have featured a minimum of four goals, while there’s been at least five goals on five occasions. In fact, the last seven matches have yielded a combined 33 strikes, while both teams have found the net in 11 of their last 14.
Away from home, all but one of Gladbach’s eight outings this term have seen at least four goals, as the exception featured three.
The visitors scored at least twice in seven of those games, and with the likes of Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea in fine form, should have the ability to register on the scoresheet in Madrid.
The do have a problem in defence though, with centre-back Nico Elvedi and left-back Ramy Bensebaini both doubts, which only further encourages that this game will produce a high output.
Real Madrid To Win And Both Teams To Score
In a major boost to Zinedine Zidane, defenders Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal are expected back for this fixture. Real Madrid’s record without the former is particularly alarming, as they’ve lost eight of the past 10 he’s missed in this tournament since 2018.
Still, the veteran centre-back’s presence doesn’t translate into clean sheets, with Real Madrid conceding exactly twice in each of the last four Champions League matches he’s played (against PSG and Man City last term, as well as Inter and Gladbach in the current campaign).
Neither side arrive at this fixture in great form and both have won just twice in their last six. However, Real Madrid did pick up a morale boosting victory away at Sevilla this weekend, though it will have come with a physical cost as Luka Modric and Toni Kroos each played the full 90 minutes.
With Federico Valverde still sidelined, Isco and Martin Odegaard may expect to see some game time from the bench in this encounter, though with his job on the line, Zidane won’t be taking any chances with his starting line-up.
We’d back Real’s experience to see them through, but with both teams scoring in seven of their last nine in this tournament, the clean sheet looks improbable.
