A 2-0 victory over a tough Inter Milan side meant Real Madrid topped their Champions League group, and extended their winning run to nine games now across all competitions.
Atletico will arguably be their toughest match in this run, with Sevilla, Real Sociedad and Inter the only sides of real quality that they’ve come up against during this time.
Atletico are looking to close the gap on their city rivals here which currently sits at 10 points, and you can only feel that defeat for the visitors here would all but end their title defence, barring a monumental collapse from Los Blancos.
A week is a long time in football, a 3-1 away victory over Porto last time out saw Atleti secure their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, and if they can take confidence from that and take maximum points here, their season will start to look very different.
To do that though they’ll have to break a five year winless drought away at Real, while they haven’t even scored in any of their last three visits (four in all competitions).
In fact, Los Rojiblancos haven’t won any of the last eiht head-to-heads at either venue in the league since May 2017, so they’ll need to muster up something special this weekend.
Under 2.5 Goals
Consistency is the issue for the visitors this season who are now looking to win back-to-back matches in all competitions for the first time since the beginning of October.
That said, they’re also very difficult to beat having lost just their second match of the season at home to Mallorca last weekend, and haven’t lost successive league matches since February 2019, so that’s a record they’ll be determined to maintain here.
While the result is uncertain, and a draw is very plausible, a safer bet seems to be an unders bet. Indeed, while Atletico haven’t been their usual defensively stable selves, their 16 goals conceded isn’t exactly poor, and Real haven’t been putting many sides to the sword either.
Los Blancos' last five home games have mustered up a total of seven goals, and even though they average the most match goals in the league this season at 3.25, that drops to just 2.00 when facing top half sides.
What’s more, in the eight league meetings since Atletico last beat their rivals, there have been a total of just 11 goals and in a game of this magnitude it’s hard to see a goals fest, even if Atletico are still searching for their first away clean sheet of the season.
