Recent Form
Rangers lead Celtic by a whopping 16 points and although they’ve played three games more, that’s still a huge gap and a win here for the hosts would have an air of finality about it.
For the visitors, a point would leave them hanging on in the title race, and nothing short of maximum points will assuage fears that the 10 in a row dream is over.
Celtic couldn’t have found a better time to find some form then. The Hoops had won just twice in 12 games across all competitions (W2-D4-L6) before their recent improvement.
Neil Lennon’s men have now won six on the trot when including their victory on penalties over Hearts in the delayed Scottish Cup final, which in turn secured the quadruple treble to hand them a phycological boost.
In fact, Celtic have won their last four league games by 2-0 or 3-0 scorelines now, though none of these encounters came against the runaway top four teams in the league, as two of them were picked up over bottom-two outfits Ross County and Hamilton.
Rangers To Beat Celtic
The visitors certainly have some convincing to do and especially given the manner in which they’ve been outplayed by Rangers in recent head to heads.
The Gers have won the last two meetings, both at Celtic Park, while in their previous clash they were severely unlucky not to take silverware in the 2019/20 League Cup final at Hampden Park.
Rangers utterly dominated that game and especially the first half, missing a second-half penalty as the Hoops went down to 10 men, while there were as many as three offside players for Celtic’s winning goal that day.
Under 2.5 Goals
Fraser Forster excelled in that final but Celtic’s current crop of goalkeepers have faced questions over their abilities.
They may not have been truly tested in the recent clean sheets they’ve kept against the bottom two and a low-scoring Dundee United, but that shouldn’t mask the shoddy defensive performances Neil Lennon’s men have been delivering all season.
Celtic have registered just five clean sheets in 18 appearances across all competitions, while Rangers have scored more goals per game than anyone in the Premiership this season.
Of course, it’s not just at the sharp end where Rangers have excelled and their defensive record this season has been staggering.
They’ve conceded just five times in 21 league games, recording 17 clean sheets, and another shutout here wouldn’t be an upset.
Indeed, at Ibrox alone this season, Rangers have conceded just the solitary strike from 10 league games, while they triumphed by at least two clear goals in all but one of these appearances.
Meanwhile, six of eight Old Firm derbies since Steven Gerrard took the Rangers job have featured fewer than three goals as one side or the other won 1-0 or 2-0.
