Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has said this month that Spurs deserve a party for the start that they’ve had to this Premier League season, considering the off the field uncertainty they’ve had to contend with. This definitely is their strongest start, with the team taking 21 points from nine games. However, as the game on Saturday against West Ham showed, they haven’t been playing well. Spurs ground out a one-nil victory at the London Stadium, and this adds to the previous wins they’ve scrapped against lower table teams including Cardiff City, Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Beautiful winning machine
Manchester City has had a much more convincing start to the season with 15 goals in their last five Premier League games. City has been termed as a ‘beautiful winning machine’ by many within the industry, and with 26 goals from nine games you can’t argue, as they stay on track to beat last season’s title winning statistics. According to Pep Guardiola, in the midweek Champions League tie away to Shakhtar Donetsk, his side played the best football he has witnessed during his reign. It’s scary to think the best is yet to come from the Sky Blues.
If you look at the two teams’ head-to-head statistics over the last five fixtures, it’s fairly even with two wins each, and a draw. However, Manchester City has won the last two games, and crucially the last fixture at Wembley Stadium - the venue for Monday’s game. So, if you want to follow form and predict Manchester City to deliver the same convincing victory of 3-1, then Premier League betting odds of 11/1 is a great option.
Goals, goals, goals
Sergio Aguero currently sits second in the chase for the golden boot in the Premier League behind Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, with six goals and one assist. Supporting Aguero at City is Raheem Sterling, who finally scored for the national team in Spain this month and has four goals and one assist to his name. Despite some commenting on Kane’s slow start to the season, he currently sits in third place with five goals and one assist. So, with goals high on the agenda for Monday’s game, odds of over 3.5 goals at 11/8 is worth a look.
Injury list
Spurs has had to contend with a high-profile injury list with the likes of Dele Alli, Danny Rose and Jan Vertonghen still out. But Spurs fans will have been encouraged to see both Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele back in the starting line-up in the Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven.
However, Tottenham Hotspur’s contenders for best players of the season so far go to Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura, both who have surprised and delighted the Spurs faithful in equal measure. Lucas Moura has had a particularly strong start to the season, having picked up the ‘Player of the Month’ Award for August and rewarding his manager’s faith in him. Odds for Erik Lamela to continue his goal-scoring form from his last Premier League outing are at 16/5 to score anytime. After a disappointing draw against Eindhoven all but ended Spurs’ hopes of progressing in the Champions League, Pochettino’s side will need a strong performance to bounce back against City.
