Ince Backs Pochettino
Speaking exclusively to Genting, he said: “At the start, when Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) took over, I said Pochettino straight away.
"I said Pochettino and, to be fair, I actually probably got lambasted by half the Man United fans because I was saying Ole’s not experienced enough.
“Pochettino is the one, the fans slaughtered me – not all of them, but some of them did – which is fine. I can deal with that, I’ve got broad shoulders.
“I remember watching Man United play at Tottenham and we won 1-0 two or three years back – Tottenham were unbelievable, the way Pochettino set his team up and the football they played, I just thought he’d be perfect.”
Don't Judge On Lack Of Silverware
Despite a positive five and a half years at Spurs, Pochettino – like so many before and subsequently after him – failed to bring silverware to North London.
But Ince believes he shouldn’t be judged by that criteria.
“I’ve met Poch a few times, he seems like a top guy and comes across very calm,” he said.
“Yes, he hasn’t won anything in England, but he’s been to the Champions League final – you can’t judge a manager on not winning anything, I think that’s the wrong way.
“Ole was in charge for three years and didn’t win anything, we got rid of (Jose) Mourinho after winning the Europa League and the FA Cup.
“We got rid of (Louis) Van Gaal after winning the FA Cup, during the last three years we’ve not won anything.
“We haven’t been close to challenging for the title in nine or 10 years. If you’re going to change things and make wholesale changes, it has to be long-term and you have to stick with the manager.
“I think Pochettino will be absolutely perfect for the job, I really, really do.”
Erik ten Hag Another Option
If the current Paris Saint-Germain boss isn’t lured to North West England, another name Ince would be happy to see in the Old Trafford hot seat is Erik ten Hag.
“I like Ten Hag, I actually like what he’s doing at Ajax – I like the style of football, sometimes he’s very open, but I like what he’s doing, and we need to start playing expansive football,” he explained.
“All the top teams are playing expansive football, they don’t play counter-attacking football.
“We need a manager who’s prepared to do that and we need to make sure we’ve got the personnel in the team that allow him to do that.
“The reason why we’re playing counter-attacking football is because we haven’t got the personnel to play the way the top teams are playing.
“There’s a lot of things for Ralf to do. Unfortunately, we’re in this situation because of the way the club has been run and we should never have been in this situation.”
